The new computer lab in my kids’ elementary school is a great achievement. The students fundraised their little hearts out and were able to help update the lab with 15 new chromebooks, 30 new comfortable and adjustable chairs and a new flat screen to use for teaching. It was really an impressive upgrade. There was just one thing wrong… look at those white walls! Something had to be done.

Introducing my latest project- a small mural in the elementary school. We decided on splashes of color with portraits of people who inspire us. Underneath their faces will be their quotes related to the school’s themes: Respect, Responsibility, Learning, and Kindness.  I put together a list of people whose words resonated with me. The school staff will vote on their favorites and we’ll pick the top six people. Secretly, I hope they vote for Bruce Lee, Gandalf, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg:

Reading is the key that opens doors to many good things in life Reading shaped my dreams, and more reading helped me make my dreams come true.”

Bruce Lee:

“Mistakes are always forgivable. If one has the courage to admit them”

Gandalf:

“I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay… small acts of kindness and love.”

I started on the splashes of color this week. Next week I’ll finish the color splashes and (after the voting results are in) I will begin the portraits. Here’s a look at the progress so far:

Who inspires you? What words of wisdom would you like to see each day?

I’ll leave you with another one of my favorites…

Thanks,

Marla Bender
